Quilt Guidelines for Humanitarian Project

Total Number of Quilts Needed: 15

Approximate Sizes:
Crib 45 x 60
Single 72 x 90
Double 90 x 90

Suggested Materials:
Cotton, Cotton-Poly blend or flannel (pre-shrunk if necessary).
Denim and Corduroy are NOT preferred as they are slot to dry and heavier to ship.
8 oz. Bonded poly batting is recommended for tied quilts.
3 or 4 ply yarn or heavy Cro-sheen

Guidelines:
Quilts may be tied or quilted by hand or machine.
If quilt is pieced, make sure all seams are secured with 1/2 inch seams.

For Tied Quilts:
Ties should be approximately 4 inches apart.
Stitch should be approximately 1/4 to 1/2 on bottom.
Mark using chalk and make sure that stitches willfully cover the mark when tied.
Use double thread of 3 or 4 ply yarn or double thread of heavy Cro-sheen.
Square Know or International stitch are preferred.
Check underneath to make sure there are no knots (batting coming through).
Please ensure that the ties cannot be pulled out.

Binding:
Should be carefully done by hand or machine.
Below are two suggested methods:
--Pillow Case Method: Recommended if tying without frames. With right sides together, lay top and bottom of quilt on flat surface. Lay batting on top, pin and sew three sides. Turn right side out and fold in the open end. Top stitch around four edges. Sew another row 1" from the edges to secure batting.
--Roll Method: Trim excess batting to allow you to bring the bottom of the quilt over the top piece, using the roll hem method. Pin and sew with a sturdy stitch.

Humanitarian Project-DONE

Don't forget about the Humanitarian Project the stake has undertaken for the Spring of 2010. Our ward will be assembling 15 quilts, 200 school bags, and 200 hygiene kits.

Donations for hygiene items are not being taken at this time, as we are hoping to collect enough money to purchase the items.

Festival of Trees-DONE

The Festival of Trees is Utah's largest display of decorated Christmas trees, the lights don't just twinkle, they inspire.
Each light shines a message of hope and love, and represents the "stars" of the Festival of Trees: children at Primary Children's Medical Center. As you visit the Festival you will see Christmas trees, wreaths, centerpieces, gingerbread creations, quilts, and enjoy entertainment for the entire family.

Each tree has a unique story behind its creation. The trees honor the life of a loved one who has passed away. Holiday entertainment is found on two stages, and the Gift Boutique offers handmade gifts for the perfect present.

Every penny raised by the Festival of Trees helps children at Primary Children's Medical Center.

The Festival runs Wednesday, Dec. 2 through Saturday, Dec. 5 at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Tickets are: $4.00/ adults; $3.00/ seniors and children age 11 and under. Children under 2 are free.

Freezer Meals

Recipes from the Freezer Meal Enrichment Activity:

Chicken Enchiladas
1. Combine the following:
1 large can cream of chicken soup
1 can green chilis
8 oz. sour cream
1/2 cup water
2 cups Jack cheese
3 cups shredded cooked chicken

2. Crumble handfuls of tortilla chips into above mixture. Add enough chips to reach desired
consistency (not too soft, not too dry).
3. Spray foil pan with cooking spray.
4. Spread mixture into pan(s).
5. Sprinkle 1 more cup of Jack cheese over the top.
6. Cover with heavy duty aluminum foil.
7. Label with instructions:

Instructions: Thaw. Bake covered 45-60 minutes at 375 degrees.

Lasagna
1. Mix
1 can spaghetti sauce
2 cups ground beef
1 cup water
2. Mix in separate bowl:
2 cups cottage cheese
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
1 egg
1/2 tablespoon Italian seasoning

3. You will also need:
2 cups mozzarella cheese

4. Layer in pan(s) 2-3 times:
1. sauce (reserve 1/2 cup for top)
2. uncooked noodles (about 6-9 total)
3. cheese mixture
4. mozzarella cheese

5. Finish with last bit of sauce mixture. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup more Parmesan and1/2 cup more mozzarella.
6. Cover with plastic wrap; then cover with aluminum foil.
7. Label with instructions:

Thaw. *Remove plastic wrap.* Bake covered for 1 hour at 350 degrees.

Ladies, this is directly copied from an email I received from Rhonda last week. She is trying to get the hang of couponing like the rest of us, and, seriously, if she can do it SO CAN WE!

Liz,
Here are are couple of my grocery savings from last week that you can put on the blog.

#1. Smith's.

The deal was you could buy 8 cereals (per transaction) for $2 each and receive $8 off. Basically, $1 per box. (Would have been cheaper if I had been collecting coupons over the last few months!) I went and bought cereal and cookies (same deal) and thought I was doing good. Then I went home and opened my Rice Krispies and they had coupon books in there with coupons on the same cereal, as well as fruit and milk. So, Cooper and I went back to Smith's and went in and out of the store four times. I used the coupons I had received the night before and bought more Rice Krispies, then we went to the car, opened the boxes and took the coupons out. Back into the store to buy more, different varieties, cereal and the milk and fruit. This is what I ended up with:

36 boxes of four varieties of cereal
7 gallons of milk (they were on sale for $1.50, plus $1 off each)
4 pounds of fresh fruit.

Total: $23.00

#2. Albertson's

Their deal was "buy $25 of participating Kraft products and receive $5 off next purchase and a $20 mail-in rebate."
The bags of grated cheese (lots of varieties) were on sale for 3/$5 (normally $3.99 each). I put 30 bags into my cart and headed to the check out. I split them into two transactions - 15 bags each.

a. First transaction totaled $25.75 (For $60 worth of cheese)
I paid and then received the $5 back and a $20 rebate.
b. Second transaction totaled $25.75.
I handed in the $5 store cash and paid $20.75. I received another $5 store cash and a $20 rebate.

I paid $45 out of pocket (for $120 worth of cheese) and still have $5 store cash to use and have sent in my TWO $20 rebates (one to Richard's office, since you can do only one per address). FREE CHEESE stocked in my freezer!

I was so inspired by our coupon class that I have recommitted to taking the time to really get the best deals I can for my family. I thought that we could share our great deals with each other to keep us motivated. Here is a deal that I got the other night.

Here are my great deals, four boxes of Eggo Waffles, four packages of Keebler cookies and two boxes of Rice Krispies. Now for you healthy organic families this would not be something that you would want. Here is how it worked: Smith's is having there Keebler products on sale, if you buy ten items in one transaction then you automatically get $4.00 off.

I bought ten items that totaled $19.34. I got $4.00 off automatically=$15.34. Then I used $5.00 in coupons that I got from the Sunday paper=$10.34. There is a Keebler promotion right now where you can get a $10.00 rebate. I will send in my rebate which means I spent $.34 on all of these items. Not bad for a shopping trip late at night.

I have seen posts like these on all of the coupon sites that are on the side bar, so I decided that I would show my great deals that I got today at Target. I added all of the original prices for each product which totaled $31.53. I found all of these products on clearance and I had coupons to use for each product, I ended up spending $6.40 all together. I figured that was a savings of 79.7%. Not bad for someone who just started learning how to use coupons a month and a half ago. The best deal of all was the mascara that I got. It was originally $4.99, it was on clearance for $1.24, which is a great deal, but I had two $1.00 off any Cover Girl make-up coupons, so the final price is each mascara was .24 cents!! If anyone has a Cover Girl coupon there is still a lot of mascara left. I would have bought more but I used all of the coupons I had.

Here are some things that I have learned about using coupons at Walgreen's, Albertson's, Smith's and Target.

Walgreen's: Their ad comes out in the Sunday newspaper. They have coupons in there adds and each month they have an additional coupon book that you can pick up at the store right by the stand that has their weekly ads, it is called the Easy Saver Catalog. There are new catalogs each month. Walgreen's does a lot of rebates on their products. This is very easy to do and you can do it online. The system online keeps track of your rebates and you can get the rebates sent back to you whenever you want. I actually have a Walgreen's rebate card and I just have all of my rebates go to the card and then they will send it to me in the mail and I use the card instead of cash. I have noticed that they give me bonuses for having this card and having my rebates come back to me this way. The thing that I love about Walgreen's is they have several of their products reduced to what they call final sale price or on clearance. You can use their coupons, manufacture coupons, or online coupons. I have also been able to stack my coupons, meaning, that if I have more than one coupon for the item I am buying I can use more than one, making it an even bigger savings. I have noticed that our Walgreen's is really picked over, but I still can get a really good deal sometimes I just have to search and wait for things to go to that final reduction price and of course use my coupons.

Smith's, Albertson's and Target: These stores are all same, as far as I can tell with their coupon using policies. I have been able to use manufacture, store and online coupons at each of these stores. I have found that you can use their store coupon and another coupon for each transaction. You can use multiple coupons on a deal as long as you use one coupon for each item. Here is an example; you purchased some cake mix that was on sale 4 for $5.00 and you have four different coupons for that same brand of cake mix you can use one coupon for each cake mix. I do this a lot with cereal at Smith's and Albertson's, (Kohlers and Maceys are the same way. ) I have also found that each of these stores has the final reduced sales price as well and you can use your coupons for these final reduced products as well. That is how I was able to get Colgate Total toothpaste for free. The final price was $.99 and I had a $1.00 off coupon, Sweet!!

I am still a novice at this coupon business but I am learning and I know I am saving money. I read on The Obsessive Shopper that you really need one coupon for every member of your family. I am now starting to see why. Just like my deal with the mascara if I had more coupons I could have bought more and I wouldn't needed to buy mascara for years, but I only had two coupons so I was only able to get two. I am looking into where and how to get multiply Sunday papers at a deal, I will let you know when I find out. If any of you have some great coupon info and know more about the policies and process of couponing please let us know. If anyone gets some great deals and wants to share their great deals with us please let me know and we will make a blog post for you. I am also starting to track my purchases I am excited to see how much I am really saving. Thanks for sharing any info you have for the blog it is a great way to help each other out.

Macey's Case Lot Sale

Maceys Grocery Store is currently having its Case Lot Sale. It usually runs at least 2 weeks. Canned goods are great for your 3 - 6 month food storage items. As our Prophet has told us, begin your food storage efforts with items your family will eat. Shelf-life on this product is generally about 5 years unless you can keep the product at a temperature of 75 degrees or less, and then you will extend the shelf-life by 3-5 years. Items on the Case Lot Sale are generally priced very well.

Just be consistent and tenacious every time you go to the grocery store or Cannery. You will be blessed for your efforts!

Jenny Thacker

Jenny Thacker is this week’s spotlight. She is kind, funny, and REAL. She says it like it is. She does not beat around the bush. You should really get to know her. Her birthday is March 9, 1974. She was born and grew up in Grantsville, Utah. She attended Grantsville High School. After high school graduation, she went to BYU! In September of her senior year, she met a guy named Ryan. One of Jenny’s roommates was Ryan’s mission president’s daughter. This roommate had a photo album and when Jenny saw a picture of Ryan, she wanted to meet him. So, her roomie set them up on their first date to a BYU football game. During this date, Jenny noticed her “old” boyfriend was also at the game and just three rows up from her and Ryan. So, during half time and all of the 3rd quarter, Jenny decided to hang out with her “old” boyfriend. Ryan was, of course, not happy about this; but Jenny won him over during the 4th quarter of the game. Just a few months later, they married in February of 1996. They have 4 boys. One of the greatest things about being a mother is when her kids are asleep (just kidding, lol). She loves to see their faces when they are happy. Her favorite food is Mexican, but she LOVES “Ruby River”. Her favorite dish to order is “Smothered Chicken”. She enjoys reading. Jenny has participated in 3 pageants and volunteers at the “Miss Utah Pageant” each year. I hope you enjoyed getting to know another Sister in our ward. (By Cindy Delano)

Recipe of the Week
White Chicken Chili
(Jill Hodgson)

4 Cans of Chicken Broth
1 lb. Great Northern Beans
1 Clove Minced Garlic
1 Chopped Onion
1 Can Green Chilies
1 tsp. Cumin
1 tsp. Oregano
4 Cups shredded chicken
Jack Cheese

Mix broth, beans, garlic, and onion; simmer for 1 hour. Add chilies, cumin, oregano, and chicken. Simmer for another hour. Serve with Jack Cheese. (It can also be made in a crock pot.)

Alternate: use 2 cups dried white beans. Rinse and soak overnight. In the morning, drain, rinse, and soak again all day. Rinse. Continue as above.

LDS Employment Resource Services

Yesterday I was able to go to a training put on by LDS Employment Resource Services. I have been learning about LDS Employment lately and I am very impressed with the program that is available. LDS Employment's mission is three fold Employment, Career Development, and Small Business Management. There are several career workshop that are available weekly, these workshops are not just for the unemployed but for anyone who is interested in starting their own business, or who is interested in finding a different job. There are some networking workshops available for those who have their own business but would like to network to possibly improve their business. I realize that most of you sister's are not looking for employment for yourselves but this may be helpful for your spouses or other family members. I will be posting the info on these workshops and Events. I hope that this information will prove to be helpful.

The Stake Relief Society would like to invite all sisters to a special birthday celebration on March 19, 2009. There will be an open house with a light buffet dinner in the Cultural Hall from 6:00 to 6:45pm and then we will move to the Chapel for a wonderful program entitled,"Women at the Well " at 7:00pm. Posters, invitations and flyers will be coming to your wards soon. Please make sure this information gets put in your Sacrament meeting and Relief Society bulletins.

Deals at Sears

I got an email from Tenille with some great info. "I went to Sears today to see what "Deals" they had for the store closing. Everything is 30-60% off. They had alot of toiletry items 50% off. Deodorant, toothpaste, tampons, lotions, etc. They also had lots of cleaning products, toilet paper, paper towels, etc.. Also medicines were 30 or 40% off! Those were the items I thought would be good to stock up on for food storage/emergency preparedness. I don't know if the prices will drop even more before the store closes....."

Just for your info, I went there the other day and I was able to get the discounts and use my coupons!! Thanks Tenille for the great info!!

I received this email from Rhonda the other day and I thought it would be great to put on the blog. I tried it out and it is pretty cool and so easy to use.

"There's a website www.pearbudget.com that is awesome. I've only spent a few minutes on it but it's a very simple program (free 30 day trial) that's easy and quick to set up - and not so intimidating as microsoft money and stuff. Totally customizable. Anyway, I'm not a budget beginner, but it's easy for a beginner. It looks like it would help anyone who needs to get budgeting under control. (after the trial it's $3 a month, but evidently they don't even take your credit card for you to get the trial - that's what I love)"

Shelving For Storage

Peanut Butter Chocolate Drops

(**These are the cookies we had at the digital scrapbooking class.)

1 cup flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2/3 c. sweetened condensed milk
1/3 c. chunky or creamy peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 F. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. In large bowl, beat sweetened condensed milk, peanut butter and vanilla. Add dry ingredients to milk mixture until completely blended. Fold in chocolate chips.

Using a tablespoon, measure dough, shape into balls, (I rolled in sugar) and place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Cool 2 to 3 minutes before removing to wire racks.

Makes 18 cookies

Chocolate Chip Chookies w/wheat flour

Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies
From The Essential Food Storage Cookbook
By Tami Cirsberger and Carol Peterson

1 cup butter, room temperature
¾ cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups whole wheat flour
¾ teaspoon salt
¾ teaspoon baking soda
¾ cup rolled oats
2 cups chocolate chips

Cream together butter, sugar, and brown sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, salt, and baking soda. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture and beat for 3 to 4 minutes. Add rolled oats and chocolate chips. Stir to combine. Drop by spoonfuls onto baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes. Watch to make sure they don’t overcook.

I just found a great web site that has a great way to track your food storage, the site is stockupfood.com. All you do is enter how many people are in your family, what you have, and how many months you want storage for. It tells you where you are at immediately!It literally took me just minutes to find out how much storage we have. I am currently working towards a year's worth of food storage for my family. I found out I am 33% there.

I just got back from Albertson's and I got a great deal on a few items. I saw in the Albertson's Ad that Orvile Redenbacher popcorn was on sale buy one box get three boxes free. I couldn't see that offer on a sign anywhere in the store but when I told the cashier about it she knew what I was talking about. It came out that each box cost $.75 each. What a deal!!! Also, I saw a deal on baby food at Albertson's but when I went to the aisle to look at the deal, there was even better deals on selected items. They had several different types of baby food 50% off. I pretty much bought them out of all that they had. I am deffinately going to check out the baby food everytime I go to Albertson's to see if I find the same deal. What good deals did any of you find? Let me know and I will post them.

Photoshop Class and Digital Scrapbook Paper

For those of you who are going to come to the photoshop class on Feb. 5th, you may want to download some digital paper. You will want to have paper so you can create some fun projects. If you have photoshop on your computer you should be able to create scrap book pages, invitations, etc. This is what we will be learning at the class. We won't be going over how to photoshop pictures to make them look better, we will have another class for that. I am going to put a link for the sites where you can find free paper as well as paper you can pay for if you want. I have only purchased paper once, the majority of my paper is free digital paper that I found online. It is so fun for me to find cute free paper so if you know a site that I don't have please let me know and I will add it to the blog. It takes awhile to download the paper so be patient. If you are going to bring a laptop to the class it would be helpful for you to have some paper. I like to look for paper kits because it will have coordinating papers and cute little embellishments that match as well. You will only need to have one kit for the class. If you don't have a laptop that is OK still come because I will have my laptop for people to use and we can share computers as well. Good luck call or email me if you have any questions.

I found a blog that has some great info on how to use coupon at Target, Walgreens and Rite Aid. I had no idea there so many ways to use coupons. Granola Recipe

At our Enrichment activity Sue made a yummy granola that we all loved. Here is the recipe, enjoy!

Granola

5 cups old fashioned oatmeal
1 cup raw sunflower seeds
1 cup sliced almonds broken up a bit
1 cup shredded coconut
1 cup instant or regular powdered milk
1/2 cup sesame seeds
1 cup wheat bran or wheat germ or oat bran

Place all the above ingredients in a large bowl and stir well.

Mix 1 cup honey and 1 cup oil (I use corn or canola or olive) until the liquid is a light carmel color and pour over the dry mixture. Stir the honey mixture into the dry ingredients until it is all moistened, then pour on to a large jelly roll pan and distribute evenly.

Bake at 275 degrees for about 1 hour, turning the mixture every 15 minutes, until slightly brown in color. Cool. Place in an air tight container (tupperware) and enjoy. I have also stored it in the freezer in ziploc bags. You could also add 1 cup raisins to the granola after baking
